Ms. McKenzie is the founder and principal consultant of the Caribbean Mindfulness Institute (CMI). A committed mindfulness practitioner, coach, and advocate, Makeda is a former HR professional with 20+ years corporate experience. Makeda received her mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) training first from the University of Massachusetts, Medical School, and later her teacher training from the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine (UCSD). Both prestigious institutions are widely considered to be the preeminent thought and research leaders in the field of Mindfulness Studies.
It is this combination of HR experience in demanding work environments, and formal mindfulness training, that gives Makeda powerful insight into how mindfulness can make a huge difference to people’s work experiences, relationships, and lives. Locally, Makeda has provided workplace mindfulness training for the National Energy Corporation, Massy United Insurance, The University of the West Indies, and IAL Engineering Services Limited, just to name a few. In addition to public and corporate workshops, Makeda has volunteered her time and resources by giving a number of free talks around the country on the topics of mindfulness and disease management, wellness, and stress management.
Makeda’s career began with the completion of a degree in Management with Economics from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. This led to progressive Human Resource Management experience, both locally and abroad, in companies such as RBC Trinidad and Tobago, Scotiabank Trinidad and Tobago, and Coca-Cola UK. She has a proven track record in corporate training, and experience in delivering a diverse range of human resource solutions that support management and staff in achieving organisational goals.
Through the CMI, Makeda has developed a number of mindfulness-based programmes aimed at serving various sectors of the population, and is also pleased to be the first to offer the world-renowned and internationally acclaimed mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programme here in Trinidad & Tobago. Videos, posts, and scientific articles about all things mindfulness can be found on the popular CMI social media pages, which provide encouragement to others on how to embrace a life of wellness and wholeness.
